This series is in-progress. Still Life with continues the exploration of vintage technology, product design, and obsolescence begun in the Tech Vanitas series.

Historical vanitas paintings celebrated the new wealth of The Netherlands in the 17th Century. The Dutch still lifes portrayed the affluence of finely crafted domestic merchandise: silk, porcelain, Venetian glass, silver goblets, and cultivated flowers. Contemporary still lifes exist in the form of advertising imagery; the newest device is carefully styled and photographed to convince potential owners of technological ascension. Perhaps more than death, we fear becoming Luddites.

Still Life with Spy Camera and Still Life with Clock Radio were created specifically for f22 Fine Art Prints, a photographic print project based in Chicago, Illinois. F22 printed each image, letter-sized, in an edition of 22 +2AP, which can only be purchased through their website. Larger prints are available from Jeanette May in a limited-edition of 10 +1AP.

Still Life with Binoculars and Still Life with Answering Machine were commissioned by The National Audubon Society. These photographs were published with Dan Koeppel’s article “Where Have All the Rare Bird Alerts Gone?” in the Winter 2021 issue of Audubon Magazine. Archival Pigment Prints are available from Jeanette May in a limited-edition of 10 +1AP.
